As part of a larger strategy to lower expenses and boost competitiveness, British luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover announced on Monday that it would eliminate almost 4,000 jobs worldwide over the next two years.

The manufacturer, which has significant locations in central England, stated that it was aiming for savings of 1.7 billion pounds ($2.30 billion), bringing its break-even mark down to 300,000 cars. Of JLR’s approximately 40,000 employees worldwide, about 30,000 work in the UK.

Opening a new tab, the company, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors (TAMO.NS), announced the cuts when Finance Minister John Healey spoke in neighboring Coventry about promoting economic growth.

The firm announced that it would be introducing five new products in the upcoming year and that the improvements would facilitate a £15–18 billion investment over the next five years in advanced manufacturing, digital technology, electrification, and improved customer experiences.

Following media reports of the anticipated job layoffs, Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds announced on Sunday that he would meet with Chief Executive PB Balaji this week to discuss the proposals.
